The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) is the world’s largest association devoted to human resource management. Representing more than 250,000 members in over 140 countries, the Society serves the needs of HR professionals and advances the interests of the HR profession. Founded in 1948, SHRM has more than 575 affiliated chapters within the United States and subsidiary offices in China, India and United Arab Emirates.

There are many other human resources in RI that may be a useful source for information:

  • The Kent County Chamber of Commerce is the leading advocate for business in the County, serving our members in ways that enhance our business community, the quality of life and the well-being of residents and visitors.
  • HealthSourceRI is a new way that Rhode Islanders and small employers can find and compare health insurance plans, and purchase the coverage that best fits their needs.
  • The Employer Handbook explains the rights and responsibilities of employers whose workers are protected by the Rhode Island Employment Security, Temporary Disability, and Workers’ Compensation Acts.
  • TDI provides benefit payments to insured RI workers for weeks of unemployment caused by a temporary disability or injury. The TDI program, enacted in 1942, was the first of its kind in the United States. It protects workers against wage loss resulting from a non-work related illness or injury, and is funded exclusively by Rhode Island workers.
  • The RI Department of Labor and Training’s Unemployment Insurance (UI) Division provides benefits to eligible unemployed and partially employed workers who have performed services for Rhode Island employers who are registered with the RI Division of Taxation’s Employer Tax Section. With few exceptions, employers of one or more workers in Rhode Island are subject to the Employment Security and the Temporary Disability Insurance Acts.
  • Workers’ compensation is insurance to provide medical expenses and lost wages to employees who are injured while working. Employers are required to have workers’ compensation insurance to cover these benefits.  The Division of Workers’ Compensation monitors the workers’ compensation system, ensuring that appropriate documents are filed to protect injured workers and employers, that claims are paid correctly, that all required employers have insurance coverage, and that insurance carriers report policy information to the Division. The Division also compiles information about injuries and costs, provides educational services, and investigates fraud. The John E. Donley Rehabilitation Center provides physical and vocational rehabilitation services for injured workers.
  • Labor Market Information describes the labor area in terms of its jobs, workers, wages, industrial structure and economic conditions. The Labor Market Information (LMI) Unit is responsible for the collection, analysis, dissemination and publication of a wide variety of information on the Rhode Island labor market. We strive to make the latest available information universally accessible to job seekers, employers, planners, policy makers, economists, news media, government officials and other customers.
  • The Rhode Island Division of Taxation provides a resource to employers for their employer tax withholding and filing responsibilities, new employer registration and other tax laws.
