JOB SUMMARY:

The Food Scientist / Food Process Engineer will support all functions of the R&D Department at Edesia. The R&D Department is cross-functional in its nature and requires extensive coordination and cooperation with other functional departments at Edesia (Production, Quality, Procurement, Maintenance, Engineering, and Warehouse). The role consists primarily of overseeing all activities related to Product and Process Development. They will also supervise work of R&D Techs as it pertains to the activities listed here. Additionally, they will collaborate regularly with external partners and consultants related to product and process development and improvements.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

The Food Scientist / Food Processing Engineer will be responsible for: Product Development:
  • Applying knowledge of food science principles and ingredient functionality to all stages of R&D work;
  • Assisting in taking processes & products from bench scale to full production while collaborating fully in a cross functional environment;
  • Maintaining accurate databases for ingredients, formulations, and fortifications and maintaining up-to-date R&D tools for formulation work;
  • Developing formulations according to customer specifications or new product concepts;
  • Researching and testing new raw ingredients and/or suppliers;
  • Ensuring ongoing product improvements, including cost savings or improved product functionality;
  • Investigating and resolving customer complaints as they relate to products or process;
  • Supervising R&D Kitchen and Pilot Plant activities, including overseeing benchwork of R&D Techs and Plant Trials;
  • ¬†Supervising all shelf life, stability, and sensory studies;
  • Attending relevant conferences and meetings; representing and speaking on behalf of Edesia, as needed;
Process Development:
  • Developing and testing new processes in Pilot Plant and/or Production Plant;
  • Assisting (and in some cases, leading) in the development of engineering improvements in Edesia‚Äôs facilities;
  • Participating in special projects, such as cross-department processing evaluations (thermal treatment) statistical process control development, etc;

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • We encourage candidates to apply who may be stronger in either Food Science OR Engineering;
  • Preferred Educational requirements:
    • BS in Food Science with experience in Food Engineering
    • BS in Food Engineering with experience in R&D
    • BS in other Engineering Fields with significant food/R&D experience
  • Certified Food Scientist (CFS) credential preferred (or interest and ability to obtain CFS credential);
  • Work experience requirements: At least 5+ years applicable work experience;
  • Excellent planning, organizational, and project management skills;
  • Strong working knowledge of food science, health and nutrition, food manufacturing processes, quality assurance principles, ingredient supply market, and market research practices, and product commercialization;
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills with ability to define problems, collect and interpret data, draw valid conclusions and propose solutions;
  • Highly innovative and creative;
  • Excellent written and oral technical communication skills.
  • Must be able to work collaboratively and effectively with multi-cultural and multidisciplinary teams and departments;

WORKING CONDITIONS:

General office environment, plus time spent in R&D lab, R&D plant, and production area. Occasional lifting, bending, pulling, collating, and filing, some of which could be heavy (>15 lbs) or require the use of carts. High utilization of office equipment, phone, computer, fax, etc.
