We currently have an opportunity available for a R&D Coating Chemist.  This individual is responsible for supporting water-borne coating formulation and development for both the polypropylene film (Torayfan®) and polyester film (Lumirror®) divisions.  The individual will translate product requirements as set forth within the New Product Development team into new product solutions. Candidates should have a broad knowledge of technical studies related to polymers, materials, chemistry and engineering.  The individual is expected to work on difficult and highly technical or involved projects.  Duties require broad conceptual judgment, initiative, and ability to deal with complex factors and ideas that are not easily evaluated, and to make decisions based on conclusions for which there is little precedent.

Essential Duties:

  • Lead technical projects related to the development of unique coatings or coating technology for value added OPP or PET films for a specific market or customer
  • Responsible for new product development from initial research through the developmental stage and into scale up of commercial activity
  • Organize and conduct pilot line trials on and off site
  • Organize and conduct production line trials in conjunction with other engineers
  • Work closely with customers to ensure Toray films perform within their further coating, adhesive, or printing processes
  • Propose production enhancements for coating technology as necessary

We are seeking candidates with a Minimum of a BS in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Materials.  5+ years’ experience with coating development preferred. Additional requirements include:

  • Strong project management experience
  • Development experience with water based coating chemistries such as polyurethanes, acrylics, polyesters, etc.
  • Hands on experience with various coating techniques, including gravure, offset, slot die, etc.
  • Demonstrated problem solving ability in coating processes or formulations
  • Experience with experimental design techniques including DOE.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to travel occasionally to customers, development trials, and industry trade shows (5-10%)
